Fibromyalgia or FMS, is an idiopathic rheumatic syndrome, which causes chronic and generalized muscle and joint pain, also due to severe drops, chronic fatigue, sleep and depressive disorders. According to recent statistics, the disease is in second place among the most common rheumatic diseases, second to osteoporosis. However, it is not easy to diagnose because the symptoms are common to other diseases and it is still not clear about what is unleashing.
Unfortunately, there is no real cure for this disorder, but you can keep the symptoms under control. This disease affects mostly women in adulthood, although there are cases where the disease has been recognized in children and adolescents. The causes are not well understood and there are many factors that can trigger fibromyalgia, such as stress resulting from strong physical trauma, or bereavement, or lack of sleep. Usually, however, is not only a single event to trigger the disease, some patients have been observed in changes in hormonal or neurotransmitter level, while other sleep disorders and some sensitivity in the muscles. In fact, those suffering from this disease seem to have a low threshold of pain tolerance, due to a change in perception that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms are definitely a persistent, intense and widespread pain, in the beginning could manifest in the cervix and shoulder and then migrate to other parts of the body. The type of pain is described by patients in different ways, some patients have as a kind of burn, others prevent stiffness, contractures and muscle tension. The 90% of people who suffer from fibromyalgia experience fatigue and fatigue, which is why it could easily be confused with chronic fatigue syndrome. In addition, sleep is disturbed and you wake up with a feeling of tiredness as if you had not slept at all. Other symptoms may include anxiety and depression, low concentration, headaches, abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, burning with urination, tingling spread, swelling in the hands and loss of memory. As already mentioned, for this disease yet there is no cure and there are no specific laboratory tests that can diagnose it, can not rule out other diseases that have similar symptoms. It is a disease which also in the medical field proves to be little known and for this reason it is very important to consult a rheumatologist who can, by careful analysis of symptoms and acupressure (points of appeal of offers), to arrive at the diagnosis and to advise a specific treatment. Often, unfortunately, this disease is associated with psychological disorders such as hypochondria, due to general symptoms and difficulties in detecting clinical data. Fibromyalgia causes a lot of disadvantages for people who suffer from it and hope that soon can be diagnosed more easily and you can find an effective remedy. In our country are only two provinces, Trento and Bolzano, which currently recognize in those who suffer from chronic exemption and deactivation. For this AISF, the Italian Association of Fibromyalgia Syndrome, has been fighting for several years with the Ministry of Health to spread to all regions of the recognition of this disease.
